Siletz

The town of Siletz is located on the Siletz River in the foothills of the Oregon Coast Range, nine miles inland as the raven flies from the beach. This fertile river valley is fondly referred to as a “Fisherman’s Paradise” for the abundant, twice-yearly runs of salmon and steehead. Today it is home to the Confederated Tribes of Siletz and a population of 1,100 full time residents. Housing in town is quite like suburban developments in other areas in addition to tribal housing for enrolled members of the tribe.

Out along the river and creeks are small farms and larger custom homes in high demand. The climate is somewhat warmer than right on the coast, so gardening is very popular. Each year in the second week in August, the Siletz hold the Nesika Illahee Pow Wow on Government Hill. It is a gathering of Native American artisans, dancers, drummers and features a salmon bake in the traditional manner.
